breadth or both, and along the boundary inside/outside. Let us illustrate
with some examples:
Example 6: Find the area of the paths made in the following fields:
40 m (b) 5 m (c) 4 m
48 m
(a) 2 m
3 m
80 m
80 m
100 m 48 m
Also, find the area of the remaining land in each case.
Solution: (a) The path is made along the length of the field.
So, length of the path = 80 m and width = 2 m
\ Area of the path = l × b = 80 m × 2 m = 160 sq. m
Further, area of the field including path
= l × b = 80 m × 40 m = 3200 sq. m
(Q l = 80 m, b = 40 m)
Thus, area of the remaining field
= 3200 sq. m – 160 sq. m
= 3040 sq. m
(b) The constructed path is along the width of the field.
So, length of the path = 80 m and width = 5 m
\ Area of the path = 80 m × 5 m = 400 sq. m
Further, length of the field = 100 m and breadth = 80 m
\ Area of the total field = 100 m × 80 m = 8000 sq. m
Thus, area of the field except path = 8000 sq. m – 400 sq. m
= 7600 sq. m
(c) The given field is in square shape of each side 48 m.
\ Area of the field = 48 m × 48 m = 2304 sq. m
