TEST YOURSELF

Find the volume of following stacks of cubes. (Each one of 1 cu. cm)

              1. 2. 3.

        Volume of a Cube

A cube is a special type of the cuboid whose every edge

        is of equal length. Edge

        i.e., Length = Breadth = Height (= Edge)
                                                                                                           Edge
         Volume of a cube = Edge × Edge × Edge
                                                                                                Edge

Example 8: Find the volume of a cuboid whose length, breadth and
height are 18 cm, 8 cm and 6 cm respectively.

Solution: Length of cuboid = 18 cm, Breadth = 8 cm and Height = 6 cm

                             Volume of the cuboid = l × b × h

                                                               = 18 cm × 8 cm × 6 cm = 864 cu. cm

Example 9: Find the volume of a cube with edge 20 cm.
Solution: Given, edge of a cube = 20 cm

 Volume of the cube = Edge × Edge × Edge

                                                               = 20 cm × 20 cm × 20 cm

                                                               = 8000 cu. cm

Example 10: Find the volume of water (in litres) that can be stored

                            in a pool of length 20 m, width 10 m and depth 2 m.

        Solution: Length of the pool = 20 m, width = 10 m and depth = 2 m

                             Volume of the pool = l × b × h

                                                               = 20 m × 10 m × 2 m = 400 cu. m

                            We know, 1 cu. m = 1000 L

                            So, 400 cu. m = 400 × 1000 L = 400000 L

                                                                                                              227
