Area
You have noticed the size of notes and coins used as Indian Currency.
You can compare easily the size of two notes or coins by placing one over
the other.
Here, the size of a 10-rupee note is smaller
than the size of a 100-rupee note. In other
words, we can say that a 100-rupee, note Specimen
covers more surface than that of a 10-rupee
note.
Here, the size of a 2-rupee coin is bigger than the size of a
5-rupee coin. That means surface covered by a 5-rupee coin is
smaller than the surface covered by a 2-rupee coin.
The surface acquired by a figure is called its area. Hence, the area of a
100-rupee note is more than that of a 10-rupee note.
If we trace the boundary of a note on a sheet of Boundary
paper, we get a rectangle. The region enclosed
by the boundary of a figure is called its interior
region.
Interior region
The region along with the boundary of a figure
is called the area of the figure.
The area is measured in square units where the side is measured in units.
Think of a unit square with each side 1 unit. Then, the area
1 square
of the square is 1 square unit or in short 1 sq unit. In case 1 unit
unit
of side 1 cm, 1 m and 1 km, the area will be 1 sq cm, 1 sq m
and 1 sq km respectively. 1 unit
Area of a Rectangle
Consider a rectangle of sides 6 cm and 4 cm. How many 1 cm of squares
can be fit in a row along the length? 6
How many such squares can be adjusted in the whole rectangle? 4
