Finding the Area of an Irregular Shape
We can find the area of an irregular shape by tracing its outline on a
square or graph paper and counting the number of squares in its interior.
For counting the number of squares, follow these rules:
Z Z Count the number of complete squares in the
interior region. 1.
Z Z Count the number of half-squares. Take the area
1
as square unit for each one.
2
2.
Z Z Count the number of more than half-squares as
complete squares.
Z Z Ignore the area less than half-square.
Consider figure 1.
Number of complete squares = 6
Number of squares more than half-square = 4
and Number of half-squares = 0
\ The area of the figure = 6 + 4 = 10 sq. units
Now, consider figure 2.
Number of complete squares = 9,
Number of half-squares = 3
Number of squares more than half-square = 4
3
\ The area of the figure = 9 + + 4
2
= 13 + 1.5 = 14.5 sq. units
Finding the Area of Paths Inside/Outside a Field
When you come across a plot, a park, a garden, a field, etc., you see,
some paths are made for walking. These paths may be along the length,
