Converting Millilitres into Litres and Millilitres
Example 17: Convert these into litres and millilitres.
(a) 6000 mL (b) 8000 mL (c) 9250 mL (d) 9100 mL
Solution: (a) 6000 mL = 6000 ÷ 1000 mL = 6 L ( 1000 mL = 1 L)
1
(b) 8000 mL = (8000 ÷ 1000) L = 8 L ( 1 mL = L)
1000
(c) 9250 mL = 9000 mL + 250 mL = 9000 ÷ 1000 L + 250 mL
= 9 L 250 mL
(d) 9100 mL = 9000 mL + 100 mL = (9000 ÷ 1000) L + 100 mL
= 9 L 100 mL
EXERCISE 5.5

5. 4 L 800 mL 6. 6 L 750 mL 7. 7 L 90 mL 8. 8 L 5 mL
B. Convert these into litres and millilitres.
1. 3000 mL 2. 4000 mL 3. 7000 mL 4. 9000 mL
5. 4220 mL 6. 8777 mL 7. 8099 mL 8. 3004 mL
Adding and Subtracting the Units of Capacity
Addition of Capacity
We arrange the numbers in the columns of L and mL, then add as per
usual addition.
Example 18: Add 35 L 600 mL and 10 L 825 mL.
Solution: L mL
1 Step 1: Add the millilitres first.
3 5 6 0 0 600 + 825 = 1425 mL = 1 L 425 mL
+ 1 0 8 2 5 Step 2: Add the litres.
4 6 4 2 5 1 + 35 + 10 = 46 L
Thus, the sum is 46 L 425 mL.
