Example 25: A man travelled 355 km by train, 245 km by bus and
60 km in a car. How much distance did the man travel in all?

Solution: Journey by a train = 3 5 5 km
Journey by a bus = 2 4 5 km

Journey in a car = + 6 0 km
Total distance = 6 6 0 km

Thus, the man travelled 660 km distance in all.

Solve the word problems.
1. A person had to cover a distance of 240 km from his house. He boarded
a bus that got stuck up after a distance of 150 km. He had to take a taxi

for the remaining journey. How much distance did he cover by the taxi?

2. A tailor cuts a piece of cloth into three pieces of length 5 m 20 cm, 4 m
80 cm and 6 m 50 cm. Find the original length of the whole piece.

3. A factory owner purchased 80 kg of sweets on the occasion of Diwali. He
distributed 23 kg of sweets among officers and 40 kg among workers. Find

the weight of sweets left.

4. Abhinav walks along the side of a triangular park with sides 15 m, 18 m
and 16 m 75 cm. What distance does he cover in four rounds of the park?

5. Prachi weighs 9 kg and Shridhi weighs 2 kg 500 g lighter than Prachi. How

much weight do they together have?

6. Mrs Ahuja bought 8 kg of rice. She gave 7 kg 500 g to her neighbour. Find
the weight of rice left with her.

7. A truck has to cover a distance of 650 km. For that, 100 L diesel was

poured into its oil tank. If 75 L of diesel was used up in the journey, how
much diesel is left in the tank?

8. A vessel, having a capacity of 9 L of oil, already has 4 L 300 mL of oil.

How much more oil can be poured into the drum?

9. A cow gives 5 L 500 mL of milk per day while a buffalo gives 3 L 750 mL

of milk per day. How much milk do they give together?
