Word Problems
Let us solve word problems involving length, mass and capacity.
Example 22: A water tank has 450 L 500 mL of water in it. If 280 L
320 mL is used, how much water is left in the tank?
Solution: L mL
Total water in the tank = 4 5 0 5 0 0
Water used = – 2 8 0 3 2 0
Water left = 1 7 0 1 8 0
Thus, 170 L 180 mL water is left in the tank.
Example 23: In a bag, there are 5 kg 250 g potatoes, 2 kg 500 g
onions and 6 kg 750 g green vegetables. What is the
total weight of the bag?
Solution: kg g
1
Weight of potatoes = 5 2 5 0
Weight of onions = 2 5 0 0
Weight of green = + 6 7 5 0
vegetables
Total weight = 1 4 5 0 0
Thus, the total weight of the bag is 14 kg 500 g.
Example 24: From a roll of 50 m long rope, a piece of length 30 m
50 cm is cut off. How much rope is left in the roll?
Solution: m cm
4 9 100
Total length of the rope = 5 0 0 0
Length of the remaining rope = – 3 0 5 0
Total weight = 1 9 5 0
Thus, 19 m 50 cm long rope is left in the roll.
