P. 135
Example 19: Add 115 L 400 mL, 240 L 500 mL and 150 L 360 mL.
Solution: L mL
1 1 Step 1: Add the millilitres.
1 1 5 4 0 0 400 + 500 + 360 = 1260 mL
2 4 0 5 0 0 = 1 L 260 mL
+ 1 5 0 3 6 0 Step 2: Add the litres.
5 0 6 2 6 0 1 + 115 + 240 + 150 = 506 L
Thus, the answer is 506 L 260 mL.
Subtraction of Capacity
Example 20: Subtract 7 L 530 mL from 10 L.
Solution: L mL
10 L means 10 L 000 mL.
9 1 0 0 0
Since there is no number in mL,
1 0 0 0 0
so regroup 10 L into 9 L 1000 mL.
– 7 5 3 0
2 4 7 0 Now, subtract mL first and then L.
Thus, the difference is 2 L 470 mL.
Example 21: Subtract 756 L 40 mL from 800 L 580 mL.
Solution: L mL
7 9 10
8 0 0 5 8 0
– 7 5 6 0 4 0
4 4 5 4 0
Thus, the answer is 44 L 540 mL.
EXERCISE 5.6
A. Add the following.
1. L mL 2. L mL 3. L mL
1 3 0 0 2 7 0 5 3 9 1 0
+ 4 5 0 0 + 5 2 1 0 + 5 7 5 0
