P. 131
Example 12: Add 14 kg 450 g and 8 kg 275 g.
Solution: kg g Step 1: Add the grams first.
1 1 450 + 275 = 725 g
1 4 4 5 0 Step 2: Add the kilograms.
+ 8 2 7 5 14 + 8 = 22 kg
2 2 7 2 5 Thus, the sum is 22 kg 725 g.
Example 13: Add 25 kg 665 g and 15 kg 560 g.
Solution: kg g
Step 1: Add the grams.
1 1 1
665 + 560 = 1225 g = 1 kg 225 g
2 5 6 6 5
Step 2: Add the kilograms.
+ 1 5 5 6 0 1 + 25 + 15 = 41 kg
4 1 2 2 5 Thus, the result is 41 kg 225 g.
Subtraction of Weight
We write weights in the columns of kg and g, then subtract the lighter
weight from the heavier weight. Also, we regroup if necessary.
Example 14: Subtract 3 kg 110 g from 5 kg 320 g.
Solution: kg g Step 1: Subtract the grams.
5 3 2 0 320 – 110 = 210 g
– 3 1 1 0 Step 2: Subtract the kilograms.
2 2 1 0 5 – 3 = 2 kg
Thus, the difference is 2 kg 210 g.
Example 15: Subtract 28 kg 725 g from 50 kg 10 g.
Solution: kg g Step 1: We know that 10 g < 725 g.
So, we take 1 kg = 1000 g borrow
4 9 9 10 10
from 50 kg.
5 0 0 1 0
Now, it will be – 1010 g
– 2 8 7 2 5
Subtract from 1010 g – 725 g = 285 g
2 1 2 8 5 Step 2: At the last we subtract from 49 kg
– 28 kg = 21 kg
Thus, the answer is 21 kg 285 g.
