Adding and Subtracting the Units of Length
Addition of Length
We arrange the given lengths under the columns of km (kilometre), m
(metre) and cm (centimetre) and add as usual. We start addition from
the smaller unit and regroup if required.
Example 5: Add 40 m 25 cm and 45 m 65 cm.
m cm
Solution:
4 0 2 5 Step 1: Add the centimetres. 25 + 65 = 90 cm
+ 4 5 6 5 Step 2: Add the metres. 40 + 45 = 85 m
8 5 9 0
Thus, the answer is 85 m 90 cm.
