Measurement of Weight
In Class 2, we learnt different non-standard units to measure weight (mass)
of an object. Thereafter, we introduced kg (kilograms, the bigger unit) and
g (grams, the smaller unit) of weight. The unit milligram (symbol, mg) is
one more unit of weight.
Here, in this level, we will explore the relation between these units and
know how to add or subtract the weights.
Let us first learn conversion of units.
Conversion of Units of Weight
Converting Kilograms into Grams
1 kg = 1000 g
Example 10: Convert the following into grams.
(a) 3 kg (b) 6 kg
(c) 4 kg 420 g (d) 6 kg 500 g Mind it!
Solution: (a) 3 kg = 3 × 1000 g = 3000 g To convert kilograms
(b) 6 kg = 6 × 1000 g = 6000 g into grams, we multiply
(c) 4 kg 420 g = 4 × 1000 g + 420 g the number of kilograms
by 1000.
= 4000 g + 420 g = 4420 g
