Page 127 - New Medley 3 Semester 2
P. 127
Example 6: Add 45 m 68 cm and 24 m 56 cm.
Solution: m cm
1 Step 1: Add the centimetres.
4 5 6 8 68 + 56 = 124 cm = 1 m 24 cm
+ 2 4 5 6 Step 2: Add the metres.
7 0 2 4 1 + 45 + 24 = 70 m
Thus, the answer is 70 m 24 cm.
Example 7: Add 4 km 325 m and 8 km 750 m.
km m
Solution: Step 1: Add the metres.
1
325 + 750 = 1075 m = 1 km 75 m
4 3 2 5 Step 2: Add the kilometres.
+ 8 7 5 0 1 + 4 + 8 = 13 km
13 0 7 5 Thus, the answer is 13 km 75 m.
Subtraction of Length
We arrange the numbers under the columns of km, m and cm first, then
subtract as learnt earlier. Borrow from bigger unit if required.
Example 8: Subtract 24 m 30 cm from 60 m 75 cm.
m cm
Solution: Step 1: Subtract the centimetres.
6 0 7 5 75 – 30 = 45 cm
– 2 4 3 0 Step 2: Subtract the metres.
3 6 4 5 60 – 24 = 36 m
Thus, the difference is 36 m 45 cm.
Example 9: Subtract 5 km 625 m from 9 km 460 m.
Solution: km m Step 1: Hence, 460 m < 625 m
8 14 6 0 So, we take 1 km = 1000 m
9 4 6 0 borrow from 9 km.
– 5 6 2 5 Now, it will be – 1460 m
Subtract from 1460 m – 625 m
3 8 3 5
= 835 m
Step 2: At the last we subtract from
8 km – 5 km = 3 km.
Thus, the answer is 3 km 835 m.
