Measurement of Length
In previous classes, we read some non-standard units of length. Also, we
introduced centimetre, metre and kilometre as standard units of length.
Here, we will extend our study about these standard units.
The units centimetre and metre are the smaller units that are used to
measure the height and short distance or length. The unit kilometre is
the bigger unit that is used to measure the distance between two places.
Conversion of Units
Converting Metres into Centimetres
1 m = 100 cm
Example 1: Convert the following into centimetres.
(a) 6 m (b) 17 m (c) 7 m 25 cm (d) 4 m 5 cm
Solution: (a) 6 m = 6 × 100 cm = 600 cm
(b) 17 m = 17 × 100 cm = 1700 cm
(c) 7 m 25 cm = (7 × 100 + 25) cm = (700 + 25) cm = 725 cm
(d) 4 m 5 cm = 4 × 100 cm + 5 cm = 400 cm + 5 cm = 405 cm
Mind it!
To convert metres into centimetres, we multiply the number of metres by 100.
To convert centimetres into metres and centimetres, we divide the number
of centimetres by 100. The quotient obtained is metre and the remainder is
centimetre.
