Measurement of Capacity

We generally measure the quantity of liquids like water, milk, oil, etc.,
in millilitres and litres. Millilitre (symbol mL) and litre (symbol L) are the

units of capacity. We define the term capacity as follows:

The quantity of liquid that a container can hold is called the capacity.

The smaller unit of capacity is millilitre and the bigger unit of capacity
        is litre.

                                      1 L = 1000 mL

Let us now learn conversion of units.

                                   Conversion of Units of Capacity

        Converting Litres into Millilitres

        Example 16: Convert into millilitres.

                             (a) 4 L (b) 7 L (c) 5 L 105 mL (d) 8 L 500 mL

        Solution: (a) 4 L = 4 × 1000 mL = 4000 mL ( 1 L = 1000 mL)

                             (b) 7 L = 7 × 1000 mL = 7000 mL

                             (c) 5 L 105 mL = 5 × 1000 mL + 105 mL

                                   = (5000 + 105) mL = 5105 mL
                             (d) 8 L 500 mL = 8 × 1000 mL + 500 mL

                                   = 8000 mL + 500 mL = 8500 mL

           Mind it!

  To convert litres into millilitres, we multiply the number of litres by
             1000.

  To convert millilitres into litres, we divide the number of millilitres

             by 1000.
