Warm Up
If A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 and so on, what does the code 7 12 15
2 5 stand for?
We have already learnt that the shape of the North Pole 90° N
Earth is like a sphere. The Earth has landmasses
and water bodies. The large landmasses are
called continents. The continents have been
divided into countries. We live in a city or a
village in one or the other country. These cities
or villages have definite locations on the globe
or on the map.
We can locate a place in a city or a village by
using its address. The address generally includes South Pole 90° S
the house number, the name of the street or Axis and Poles of the Earth
road, and the name of the city and state. In
early times, we did not have the address system for locating cities or
villages. Maps only showed the names of thousands of places. We want
to locate them exactly.
Since the Earth is like a sphere, it does not have a top or bottom or side
that can be used as a starting point. The Earth rotates around its axis.
The endpoints of the axis are fixed. These two endpoints can be used as
starting points on the Earth or on the globe. These endpoints are named
as North Pole and South Pole.
