Fill in the blanks with information from the text.
1. The Earth rotates on its .

5. The Arctic Circle is on N.
Locating places on the Globe
The network of parallels and meridians on the globe is called the grid
or the graticule. We can locate all places on the Earth’s surface with
the help of the grid. To locate a place on the globe, we should know
the values of latitude and longitude. The place at which the parallel of
that latitude and the meridian of that longitude cross each other, is the
location of that place.
AT ONE GO
The endpoints of the axis can be used as starting points on the Earth or on the globe.
The line which has been drawn between the North Pole and the South Pole is named as the
equator.
Circles drawn parallel to the equator in both the hemispheres are called parallels or lines of
latitude.
The parallels and meridians intersect at right angles.
The network of parallels and meridians on the globe is called the grid or the graticule.
REMEMBER THESE TERMS
Parallels : The complete circles that parallel to the equator and between the two Poles.
Meridians : The semicircles joining the North Pole with the South Pole.
Equator : The longest parallel which divides the Earth into two equal parts.
Grid : The network of parallels and meridians on the globe or on the map.
Prime Meridian : The meridian passing through Greenwich marked as 0°.
