Converting Unlike Decimals into Like Decimals
We use the concept of equivalent decimals to convert unlike decimals into
like decimals.
Examples: 5.381, 62.5, 6.92 (Unlike decimals)
5.381, 62.500, 6.920 (Like decimals)
This helps us to compare as well as add or subtract decimals.
Comparing Decimals
Arun buys a chalk for `1.05 and an eraser for `1.5. Which item is cheaper?
To compare the prices of the above items, first, we convert them into like
decimals.
Here, cost of a chalk = `1.05 and cost of an eraser = `1.50
Now, compare whole number parts, here 1 each. Then, compare the digits
at the tenths place.
Here, 0 < 5, So, `1.05 < `1.50.
Hence, the chalk is cheaper than the eraser.
For comparing or ordering decimals, compare the wholes first, if they are
the same, then move to tenths, hundredths, thousandths and so on.
Example 3: Compare the following.
(a) 7.832, 63.2 (b) 5.9, 5.099 (c) 0.23, 0.251
Solution: (a) Make the decimals equivalent. 7.832, 63.2 → 63.200
Since, 7 < 63 (whole number part), therefore, 7.832 < 63.2
(b) 5.9 → 5.900 and 5.099 have the same wholes.
Here, 9 tenths > 0 tenths ∴ 5.900 > 5.099 or 5.9 > 5.099
