Equivalent, Like and Unlike Decimals
In Class IV, we have learnt that the decimals representing the same value
are called equivalent decimals.
5 1 50 1 500 1
Example: 0.5 = = , 0.50 = = and 0.500 = = .
10 2 100 2 1000 2
So, 0.5, 0.50 and 0.500 are equivalent decimals.
The decimals having an equal number of decimal places are called like
decimals.
Examples: 62.3, 539.2, 0.8 (All have 1 decimal place)
8.53, 0.01, 225.18 (All have 2 decimal places)
123.231, 8.359, 0.009 (All have 3 decimal places)
The decimals with different numbers of decimal places are called unlike
decimals.
Examples: 2.3, 6.258, 19.02 Only decimal part
↓ ↓ ↓ determines the group of like
1 place 3 places 2 places and unlike decimals.
