We read the whole number part as usual. Then, we read decimal as ‘point’
and hence read each digit, after the point, individually.
Examples: 12.15 is read as Twelve point one five.
26.063 is read as twenty-six point zero six three.
127.002 is read as one hundred twenty-seven point zero zero two.
How to Convert a Decimal into a Fraction and a Fraction into a Decimal
Let us express a decimal 1.234 into its fractional form.
2 3 4
Expanded form of 1.234 = 1 + 0.2 + 0.03 + 0.004 or 1 + + +
10 100 1000
2 3 4 1000 200 30 4
and 1 + + + = + + +
10 100 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000
1000 + 200 + 30 + 4 1234
= =
1000 1000
Here, we observe that the fraction has all the digits, without decimal point,
as the numerator. And its denominator has 1 and as many zeros after it
as the number of digits in the given decimal after decimal point.
Using this idea, we can also express the other decimals into fractions.
Thereafter, we can reduce them into their simplest terms.
Example 1: Convert the following decimals into fractions.
(a) 1.25 (b) 0.008 (c) 0.75
125 125 ÷ 25 5
Solution: (a) 1.25 = = =
100 100 ÷ 25 4
(Write all the digits in the numerator without point.
Count the number of digits after decimal, i.e., 2, so
write two zeros after 1 in the denominator.)
8 1 × 8 1
(b) 0.008 = = =
1000 8 × 125 125
