MATHS LAB ACTIVITY • Experiential Learning

                                                                                   1 3
Aim: To find the sum of two unlike fractions, say and
                                                                                   6 4

Materials: Drawing sheet, sketch pens of two colours, a geometry box, a
               papercutter and glue
               Method:

                 1. Take the drawing sheet of paper and draw three circles having same radius

with the help of a pair of compasses.
                 2. Divide the first circle into six equal parts and colour one out of six. It
                               1
shows of the whole. Cut it out using a papercutter.
                               6

                 3. Divide the second circle into four equal parts and colour its three parts.
                                    3
It reflects of the whole. Cut it out using a papercutter.
                                    4

                                            3
                                           4

                 4. Divide the third circle into 12 equal parts and place the

two cut-outs obtained in steps 2 and 3 together such
that they do not overlap each other. (Note that first 11

piece will be aligned with the radius and the second 12
piece will be placed just after it.)

Now, observe how many parts are covered exactly. It

                               11
                     shows part is covered.
                               12
                                                                                                        1 3 11
Observation: The third circle shows the sum of two fractions, i.e., + =
                                                                                                         6 4 12
