E. Arrange the following decimals in ascending order.
1. 3.51, 5.61, 1.56, 5.16
2. 0.4, 0.44, 1.40, 0.044
3. 1.9, 2.1, 91, 0.91
Addition and Subtraction of Decimals
We add or subtract the decimals by converting the unlike decimals into
like decimals and putting the decimal points in a column.
Example 5: Add 3.62, 35.6 and 2.356
Solution: Write the addends one below the other aligning the decimal
point.
1 1
3 . 6 2 0 Convert the unlike decimals into like
3 5 . 6 0 0 and add as usual.
+ 2 . 3 5 6
4 1 . 5 7 6
Thus, 3.62 + 35.6 + 2.356 = 41.576
Example 6: Subtract 83.962 from 100.38
Solution: Convert unlike decimals into like decimals. Write the
larger decimal up and the smaller decimal below it to
align with the point.
9 9 13 7 10
Subtract as usual and place the
1 0 0 . 3 8 0
decimal point in the difference just
– 8 3 . 9 6 2
below the decimal column.
1 6 . 4 1 8
Thus, 100.38 – 83.962 = 16.418
