P. 145
Let us see some illustrated examples.
Example 12: Divide 48796 by 52.
Solution: 9 3 8
52 4 8 7 9 6
– 4 6 8
1 9 9
– 1 5 6
4 3 6
– 4 1 6
2 0
Step 1: Think 48 ÷ 5. As 5 × 9 = 45 < 48
Now, multiply 52 × 9 = 468 < 487
Now, divide and we get Q = 9 and R = 19.
Step 2: Bring down 9 and think 19 ÷ 5.
As 5 × 3 = 15 < 19
Now multiply 52 × 3 = 156 < 199
Divide and we get Q = 3 and R = 43.
Step 3: Bring down 6 and think 43 ÷ 5.
As 5 × 8 = 40 < 43
Now, multiply 52 × 8 = 416 < 436
Divide and we get Q = 8 and R = 20.
Thus, 48796 ÷ 52 gives Q = 938 and R = 20.
Check: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder
= 938 × 52 + 20 = 48776 + 20 = 48796 → Dividend
