P. 146
Example 13: Divide 3976548 by 845.
Solution: 4 7 0 5
845 3 9 7 6 5 4 8
– 3 3 8 0
5 9 6 5
– 5 9 1 5
5 0 4
– 0 0 0
5 0 4 8
– 4 2 2 5
8 2 3
Step 1: Think 39 ÷ 8. As 8 × 4 = 32 < 39
So, multiply 845 × 4 = 3380 < 3976
Now, divide and we get Q = 4 and R = 596.
Step 2: Bring down 5 and think 59 ÷ 8.
As 8 × 7 = 56 < 59, multiply 845 × 7 = 5915 < 5965
Now, divide and we get Q = 7 and R = 50.
Step 3: Bring down 4, but 5 < 8
So, put Q = 0 and R = 504 the same.
Step 4: Bring down 8 and think 50 ÷ 8.
8 × 6 = 48 < 50, but 845 × 6 = 5070 > 5048
So, use 845 × 5 = 4225 < 5048.
Now, divide and we get Q = 5 and R = 823.
Thus, 3976548 ÷ 845 gives Q = 4705, R = 823.
Word Problems
Example 14: 675000 items are to be packed in boxes. If 250 items
can be packed in one box, how many boxes are required
to pack all the items?
Solution: 250 items can be packed in 1 box.
So, 675000 items can be packed in 675000 ÷ 250 boxes
= 2700 boxes
