Word Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction

Example 5: Mr. Madhav bought a car for `18,25,400. He also

bought a car for his wife for `19,35,700. What is the
total cost of the two cars?

Solution: Cost of first car = ` 18,25,400

                            Cost of second car = + ` 19,35,700

                            ∴ Total cost = ` 37,61,100

Example 6: In the year 2013, 698542 tonnes of maize, 747958
tonnes of rice and 1069574 tonnes of wheat were

produced in a state. What was the total production of
                            these grains in that year?

Solution: Production of maize = 698542 tonnes

Production of rice = 747958 tonnes

                                        Production of wheat = + 1069574 tonnes

∴ Total production of grains = 2516074 tonnes

Example 7: The population of a town is 5269582. Out of these, 3695874

are males, how many females are there in the town?

Solution: Total population of a town = 5269582

                                     Total number of males = – 3695874

So, total number of females = 1573708

Example 8: Subtract the sum of 12345670 and 20135689 from the
                            sum of 44442222 and 55557778.

        Solution: Step 1 12345670 Step 2 44442222 Step 3 100000000

                                     + 20135689 + 55557778 – 32481359

                                        32481359 100000000 67518641
