The Basic Operations
In the previous classes, we have learnt four basic operations, i.e., addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division for numbers up to six digits. The operations
are done with large numbers in the same way as done for small numbers.
Addition
In the process of addition, numbers are added together. These numbers
are called addends and the result so obtained is called the sum.
To add the numbers, first arrange the numbers in columns according to
place values and then add ones, tens, hundreds and on. Remember to
carry over, if any, to the next column.
Example 1: Add the following numbers.
(a) 22358676 and 44510312
(b) 2345797, 78435729 and 683472
Solution: Arrange the numbers in columns and add.
(a) 22358676 (b) 1111111
+ 44510312 2345797
66868988 78435729
+ 683472
