larger numbers at top and the smaller numbers below them according to
the place values of the digits. Start subtraction from the ones place, then
move tens, hundreds and so on taking borrow from the higher places if
required.
For a subtraction fact,
Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference
There are two related facts:
Minuend – Difference = Subtrahend
and Subtrahend + Difference = Minuend
Example 3: Subtract 46853297 from 78546924.
Solution: 14 11
7 4 14 8 1 14
7 8 5 4 6 9 2 4 → Minuend
– 4 6 8 5 3 2 9 7 → Subtrahend
3 1 6 9 3 6 2 7 → Difference
Check:
1 1 1 1
Subtrahend → 4 6 8 5 3 2 9 7
Difference → + 3 1 6 9 3 6 2 7
Minuend → 7 8 5 4 6 9 2 4
Example 4: Fill in the missing digit. 7 2 9 6 3 8
7 2 6 3 – 2 0 5 4 2 3
– 2 5 2 3 5 2 4 2 1 5
2 4 2 5
Solution: At O, 8 – 3 = 5; T, 3 – 2 = 1 ; H, 6 – 4 = 2;
Th, 9 – 5 = 4; T-Th, 2 – 0 = 2; L, 7 – 2 = 5
