Hence 7962 rounded to nearest hundreds is
7900 + 100 = 8000.
(c) Digit in tens place of 2852 is 5.
Clearly rule 2 is applicable. To round the number, we
replace the units digit and tens digit both by zeros
and add 100.
Hence 2852 rounded to nearest hundreds is
2800 + 100 = 2900.
Rounding to the nearest thousands
Rule 1: If the digit in the hundreds place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less
than 5)then we make the hundreds, tens and units place all as
zeros.
Rule 2: If the digit in the hundreds place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more
than or equal to 5) then we make the hundreds, tens and units
place as zeros and add 1000.
Example 21: Round the following numbers to the nearest thousands.
(a) 4276 (b) 7982
Solution: (a) Digit in hundreds place of 4276 is 2.
Clearly rule 1 is applicable.
To round the number, we replace the digits in hundreds,
tens and ones places by zeros.
Hence 4276 rounded to nearest thousands is 4000.
(b) Digit in hundreds place of 7982 is 9.
Clearly rule 2 is applicable.
To round the number, we replace the digits in hundreds,
tens and ones places by zeros and add 1000.
Hence 7982 rounded to nearest thousands is: 7000 +
1000 = 8000.
