P. 103
Example 13: Write the largest and the smallest number using each
of the digits 4, 1, 6 and 5 exactly once.
Solution: We have the digits 4, 1, 6, 5.
First we will write the largest number.
Let us arrange the digits in decreasing order: 6, 5, 4 and 1
The required number is 6541.
Now let us write the smallest number.
Let us arrange the digits in increasing order: 1, 4, 5 and 6
The required number is 1456.
Ascending and Descending Order
Ascending order or increasing order → from smallest to greatest
Example 14: Arrange 8621, 3452 and 2814 in ascending order.
Solution: First we consider the digits in thousand’s place.
As 2 thousands < 3 thousands < 8 thousands Th H T O
∴ 2814 < 3452 < 8621 8 6 2 1
3 4 5 2
Numbers in ascending order are 2814,
3452, 8621 2 8 1 4
Descending order or decreasing order → from greatest to smallest
Example 15: Arrange 8531, 7483 and 3814 in descending order.
Solution: First we consider the digits in thousand’s place.
As 8 thousands > 7 thousands > 3 thousands
Th H T O
∴ 8531 > 7483 > 3814 8 5 3 1
Numbers in descending order are 8531, 7 4 8 3
7483, 3814
3 8 1 4
