P. 107
To round the number to nearest 10, we replace 6 by 0
and add 10.
4760 + 10 = 4770
Hence 4766 rounded to nearest tens is 4770.
(c) Ones digit of 2345 is 5.
Clearly rule 2 is applicable.
To round the number to nearest 10, we replace 5 by 0
and add 10.
2340 + 10 = 2350
Hence 2345 rounded to nearest tens is 2350.
Rounding to the nearest hundred
Rule 1: If the digit in the tens place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less than
5) then we make the tens and the units place both as zero.
Rule 2: If the digit in the tens place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more than
or equal to 5) then we make the tens place and units place both
as zeros and add 100 to the number.
Example 20: Round the following numbers to the nearest hundreds.
(a) 2715 (b) 7962 (c) 2852
Solution: (a) Digit in tens place of 2715 is 1.
Clearly rule 1 is applicable.
To round the number, we replace the units and tens
place both by zeros.
Hence 2715 rounded to nearest hundreds is 2700.
(b) Digit in tens place of 7962 is 6.
Clearly rule 2 is applicable.
To round the number, we replace the units digit and
tens digit both by zeros and add 100.
