P. 110
Rule 1: Repetition of numeral means addition. Only I and X can be
repeated maximum up to three times. V can never be repeated.
For example, II = 1 + 1 = 2, III = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, XX = 10 + 10
= 20 and XXX = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30
Rule 2: A numeral of smaller value written to the right of a numeral with
bigger value means addition.
For example, VI = 5 + 1 = 6, XII = 10 + 2 = 12, XV = 10 + 5
= 15
Rule 3: A numeral of smaller value written to the left of a numeral with
larger value means subtraction. V can never be subtracted.
For example, IV = 5 – 1 = 4, IX = 10 – 1 = 9
Rule 4: For expressing numerals greater than 10, the numbers are split
into tens and ones.
For example, 11 = 10 + 1 = X + I = XI, 17 = 10 + 7 = X + VII
= XVII
24 = 20 + 4 = XX + IV = XXIV
