Successor and Predecessor
The number that comes just after a number is called its successor.
9 comes just after 8, so 9 is successor of 8.
37 comes just after 36, so 37 is successor of 36.
565 comes just after 564, so 565 is successor of 564.
6296 comes just after 6295, so 6296 is successor of 6295.
We can obtain the successor of a number by adding 1 to it.
successor 8 is 8 + 1 = 9.
successor 37 is 37 + 1 = 38.
successor 565 is 565 + 1 = 566.
successor 6296 is 6296 + 1 = 6297.
We can add 1 to any number, so every number has a successor.
The number that comes just before a number is called its predecessor.
7 comes just before 8, so 7 is predecessor of 8.
68 comes just before 69, so 68 is predecessor of 69.
745 comes just before 746, so 745 is predecessor of 746.
9872 comes just before 9873, so 9872 is predecessor of 9873.
We can obtain predecessor of a number by subtracting 1 from it.
predecessor of 8 is 8 – 1 = 7.
predecessor of 69 is 69 – 1 = 68.
predecessor of 746 is 746 – 1 = 745.
predecessor of 9873 is 9873 – 1 = 9872.
