               Look at the following advertisements.

                                                                                                  Diwali

In our daily life, we come across the symbol % called per cent. The word

‘per cent’ is derived from Latin word per centum which means ‘per 100’
               or ‘out of 100’.

In the given advertisements, we observe 40% off on the sale of shoes that means

`40 will be reduced in `100. 20% extra and 33% extra are respectively written on

a packet of biscuits and glucose. That means, 20 g more biscuits is given at per
               100 g biscuits and 100 g + 33 g glucose is given against 100 g glucose.

Why Do We Need to Know About Percentage?

                 1. 6 out of 200 items made by a machine were defective.

How many items would be defective if only 100 items were made?
                                  items.

                 2. 20 out of 500 eggs collected in a farm are defective.

If 100 eggs are collected how many would be defective? eggs.

                 3. In a term-test, Sohan scored 34 out of 50 marks. How many would

he have scored if the test was of 100 marks? marks.
