4. REACHING FOR THE SKIES
It was a historic day for India when it saw the first-ever march by women army, navy
and air force personnel during the 66th Republic Day Parade on 26 January 2015. The
central theme of the parade was ‘women’s empowerment’. The women’s contingent
marched down Rajpath.
Haobam Bella Devi, who is 24-year-old and from Manipur, was chosen to unfurl the
Tricolour for the then President Pranab Mukherjee at the Republic Day function. The
then US President Barack Obama and First lady Michelle Obama witnessed the feat.
Devi, a second-generation army officer, was chosen to take a lead role because the
Republic Day Parade was themed around ‘women power’ in line with ‘Nari Shakti’.
The army’s women contingent was led by Captain Divya Ajith. She is the first woman
in the army’s history to have won the coveted Sword of Honour (which is awarded to
the best cadet) in 2010 at Officers Training Academy in Chennai.
The navy’s tableau was led by Lt. Commander Sweta Kapoor and Lt. Varthika Joshi. The
crowd cheered and clapped for all of them.
