A lunar eclipse can also be either partial or

               total.

 e partial lunar eclipse occurs when
                    the moon is partly hidden.

 e total lunar eclipse occurs when the
                    moon is completely hidden.
Partial lunar eclipse Total lunar eclipse
                                                               TIDES

e rise and fall in the level of sea water due to the combined e ect of the
gravitational pull of the moon and the sun is called tides.
e earth and the moon attract each other by the gravitational pull. e moon

tries to pull everything on the earth closer to it.

e water on the surface of earth is always moving. As a result, when the moon’s
               pull acts on the earth,

 e water of seas on the side of the earth facing the moon is attracted upwards

                    causing a high tide.

 e water of the seas on the side of the earth facing away from the moon
rushes towards the side facing the moon causing a low tide.

                                                                                  Low tide High tide

                                   Sun Earth
                                                           Formation of tides

We get two high tides and two low tides every day. e highest tides occur at

the time of the New moon and the Full moon.

                                                ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES

An arti cial satellite is a man-made object that continuously orbits the earth or

some other body in space. Most arti cial satellites orbit the earth.

Arti cial satellites have also orbited the moon, the sun, asteroids, and the planets
Venus, Mars and Jupiter. Such satellites mainly collect information about the
               bodies they orbit.
