at which they are located. The process of taking out minerals from the

        Earth is called mining.

Minerals can be broadly grouped as

        metallic and nonmetallic minerals. Mineral
ores containing metals, such as iron,

copper, aluminium, silver, etc., are called
        metallic minerals. Nonmetallic minerals

do not contain metals. They include mica,
limestone, salt, coal and diamonds. Mining

Coal and petroleum are important sources of energy. They are called
mineral fuels. Most of the minerals have impurities. Metals are separated

from the ores through a process called smelting. India is very rich in
several mineral resources. Minerals are not uniformly distributed. Some

areas like the Northern Plains of India are poor in minerals. Most of
the metallic minerals are found in the Southern Plateau region. The

important minerals found in India are iron, manganese, aluminium, coal,
        petroleum, mica, copper, etc.
