STEM ACTIVITY 1
Filtering muddy water using a filter paper
¶ Take a filter paper and fold it in half, then in half again.
¶ Open the folded circle a little to make a cone.
¶ Put the filter paper cone inside a funnel and set the funnel
in a glass jar.
¶ Take muddy water in another jar.
¶ Slowly pour the muddy water into the funnel.
¶ Look at the water coming out through the funnel.
¶ The cone inside the funnel separates dirt from water, so
the water that passes through is clean while the mud and
impurities stay on the filter paper.
STEM ACTIVITY 2
Showing how steam changes back into water (condensation)
¶ Take a pot and boil some water in it.
¶ Take a pan with a handle and put some ice cubes
in it.
¶ Place an empty container beside the pot.
¶ Hold the pan of ice over the steam coming from
the boiling water.
¶ Position the container so that the drops of water
dripping from the bottom of the ice pan are
collected in it.
¶ Observe what happens after a few minutes.
¶ Steam from boiling water cools down when it
touches the ice pan and changes back into water. This shows how condensation happens.
STEM ACTIVITY 3
Showing that air occupies space and changes when temperature changes
¶ Take an empty bottle and keep it in the
freezer for 15 minutes.
¶ Remove the cold bottle and stretch a balloon
over its mouth.
¶ Dip the bottle halfway into a container of
hot water.
¶ Observe what happens to the balloon.
¶ Air inside the bottle expands when heated.
This expanded air makes the balloon grow
in size.
