wet ground after rains Ice cubes Water vapour

        provide open surface
        for evaporation. The

        process of evaporation
        can be slow or fast,

depending on some Water in solid form Water in liquid form Water in gaseous form
        factors.

Factors affecting the rate of evaporation

The factors that affect the rate of evaporation are:

          Temperature
          Surface area

          The speed of wind
          Humidity

We can find the effect of these factors by doing some simple activities.

           Activity S E L Self-Management • Hands-on Learning

To check the effect of temperature on evaporation
Take two identical glass tumblers and fill them with water. Put one of
them in the shade and the other in the sun for a day. Notice the level
of water in both the tumblers in the evening. Which one of them has
          lost more water?

The tumbler kept in the sun has lost more water. This shows that evaporation is

faster when the temperature is higher.

                                                                                                 • Hands-on Learning
           Activity

To check the effect of surface area on evaporation
Take a glass tumbler and a plate. Pour equal amount of
water in both. Put them in the sun for two hours. Observe
what happens? In which of the two does water evaporate
          faster?
