1. 8.36, 0.7, 5, 9.123, 1.5

2. 4.6, 5.92, 0.001, 1.67

3. 1.23, 5.01, 3.025, 0.1

4. 4.123, 9.25, 623, 0.009

Comparing and Ordering Decimals

To compare and order the decimals, we follow these steps:

Step 1: Compare the whole numbers first as learnt earlier.

Step 2: If the whole numbers are equal, then compare the decimal

places from left to right, i.e., first tenths, then hundredths and
thousandths places.

Now, let us see some examples.

Example 4: Compare the following.

(a) 4.62 and 11.5 (b) 6.18 and 6.24

Solution: (a) The decimal with greater whole number is the bigger.

Here, 4 < 11

∴ 4.62 < 11.5 or 11.5 > 4.62

(b) Here, whole number 6 = 6, so move towards decimal
part.

In 6.18 and 6.24, at the tenths place, 1 < 2

So, 6.18 < 6.24 or 6.24 > 6.18

Example 5: Convert the following into like decimals and compare.

(a) 3.68 and 3.624 (b) 0.594 and 0.59
