Like and Unlike Decimals

As we know, fractions having the same denominator are called like fractions.

In the same way, decimals having the same number of decimal places are

        called like decimals.

For example, 0.21, 3.58 and 46.06 are like decimals as each of these has

        two decimal places.

Further, fractions having the different denominators are called unlike

        fractions.

Similarly, decimals having different numbers of decimal places are called
        unlike decimals.

For example, 0.9 (one decimal place), 1.25 (two decimal places) and 5.962
(three decimal places) are unlike decimals.

Converting unlike decimals into like decimals

We can convert unlike decimals into like decimals by finding their equivalent
decimals having the same decimal places.

Example 3: Convert unlike decimals into like decimals.

                             (a) 8, 7.1, 0.024 (b) 4.3, 6.08, 23.359

Solution: (a) In the given group, one of the decimals has maximum

three decimal places. So, 8, 7.1 and 0.024 can be
converted into like decimals as follows:

                                   8 = 8.000  7.1 = 7.100  0.024 = 0.024

                             (b) In the given group, one of the decimals has maximum

                                   three decimal places.

Therefore, unlike decimals 4.3, 6.08 and 23.359 can

be converted into like decimals as 4.300, 6.080 and
                                   23.359.
