Example 8: Add 4.9 and 2.572.

Solution: In these decimals, addends are unlike decimals, so write

them in columns after making like decimals and add as
                            usual.

                                 1 1
                                                →
                                 4 . 9 4 . 9 0 0
                                                →
                             + 2 . 5 7 2 2 . 5 7 2
                                                ←
                                 7 . 4 7 2 7 . 4 7 2 Thus, 4.9 + 2.572 = 7.472

                                         Subtraction of Decimals

To subtract a decimal from the other, follow these steps:

Step 1: Write the minuend and subtrahend in such a way that their
decimal points fall in the same column and also the digits having

the same place in the same column.

Step 2: Subtract as in the case of whole numbers.

Step 3: Put the decimal in the difference (result) directly below the column

                     of the decimal point.

        Example 9: Subtract 4.682 from 8.853.

Solution: Write the decimals in columns and subtract.

                                     7 15

                                8 . 8 5 3

                             – 4 . 6 8 2

                                4 . 1 7 1 Thus, 8.853 – 4.682 = 4.171

        Example 10: Subtract 3.125 from 5.2.

Solution: Write the decimals in columns after making them like

                            decimals and then subtract.

                                                                                                              117
