               Thorn Forests

Thorn forests are found in those areas
where the annual rainfall is about 50 cm.

The trees in these forests are short and
have long roots. The trees have thick

bark and thorns. The main types of
trees are babul, palms, kikar, etc. Thorn

forests are mostly found in Rajasthan,
               Haryana and Gujarat. Thorn forest

               Tidal Forests

Tidal forests are also called mangrove
forests. They can grow in fresh as
well as in saline water. These forests

are mostly found in the deltas of

rivers along the coast. The Ganga-
               Brahmaputra delta has the largest
area under mangrove forests. The main

tree is sundari. This area is called Tidal forest
               Sundarbans.

               Mountain Forests
A variety of trees grow along the slopes

of the Himalayan mountains and Nilgiri
hills. Deciduous forests are found along

the lower slopes. Coniferous trees are
found in the higher altitudes. The main

coniferous trees are pine, cedar, fir, chir
and spruce. These are softwood trees

and have conical needle-shaped leaves. Mountain forest
