Soil is a natural resource. We get almost all our food directly or indirectly
from it. The soil is the uppermost layer of the Earth’s surface. It is formed
due to the breaking of rocks by natural and man-made forces. The formation
of soil is a very slow process. It may take
thousands of years to develop a very thin
layer of soil. Soil is a mixture of sand,
clay and organic matter (decayed leaves,
bacteria and castings of earthworms). It
also has moisture and air. The importance
of soil lies in its capacity to produce crops
called fertility. India has highly variable
relief features. Thus, the soils in India
vary from place to place. They also differ
in colour, composition and fertility.
