The tiger is found in many parts of India. The Royal Bengal Tigers live
in Sundarbans. Other wild animals are
neelgai, antelopes, blackbuck, gazelle, etc.
The Indian forests are home to monkeys
and langurs.
Peacock, the national bird of India, is the
most beautiful among the Indian birds.
The other birds are pheasants, geese,
mynahs, parakeets, pigeons, cranes, Asiatic lion
hornbills, etc. The rivers are full of fishes and reptiles.
The wild animals in our country have been killed by the hunters and
poachers. Thus many types of animals have become extinct. Many more
are facing the danger. We must take immediate steps to save our wildlife.
The government of India has developed a large number of wildlife
sanctuaries, National Parks and Tiger Reserves to save the wildlife. The
Wildlife Week is observed in our country in the month of October
every year.
AT ONE GO
Forests, grasslands and shrubs are important natural resources.
India has five types of forests—evergreen, deciduous, thorny, tidal and mountain forests.
Evergreen forests are found in humid and hot climate. Rosewood, ebony, etc., are important trees.
Deciduous forests have valuable trees—teak, shisham, sandalwood, semul and bamboos.
Tidal forests are found in the river deltas of the Ganga and the Brahmaputra. The main tree is
Sundari.
Mountain forests are found on the slopes of the Himalayan mountains and the Nilgiri hills.
India has a variety of wildlife. We have many reserves for the protection of wildlife.
