1 Our Big City—Kolkata
Warm Up
This is the living heritage of India. It is found only in Kolkata. Can
you name it?
Kolkata, earlier called Calcutta, is one of the four metro cities in India.
The city of Calcutta (Kolkata) gained importance during the British East
India Company and the British Rule. Calcutta remained the capital of
India till 1911. Kolkata is situated on the banks of the Hugli river. It is
a little away from the sea coast. One needs to cross the Hugli river to
enter Kolkata through railways.
Kolkata enjoys a mild type of climate
almost throughout the year. The climate
is neither hot in summer, nor cold in
winter. There is a heavy rainfall in the
rainy season and the general weather is
warm and humid.
