Division Stories

Some daily situations require division of a bigger number by a smaller

number. This may or may not leave behind a remainder.

Example 3: Aman wants to fix 56 stamps equally in 8 pages of
her stamp album. How many stamps should she fix
                           on each page?

Solution: Number of stamps = 56

        Number of pages = 8

        \ Number of stamps on each page = 56 ÷ 8 = 7 (Recall that 8 × 7 = 56)

Example 4: 6 eggs can be packed in a tray. How many trays are
                           needed to pack 672 eggs?

Solution: For 6 eggs we need 1 tray.

          For 672 eggs we need (672 ÷ 6) trays.

                                      1 1 2
                                   6 6 7 2

                                      – 6
                                        7

                                       – 6
                                           1 2

                                       – 1 2
                                            0

        Thus we need 112 trays.

Example 5: 374 toffees are to be packed in pouches. 8 toffees can

be packed in a pouch. How many complete pouches
be packed? How many toffees are left behind?

Solution: For 8 toffees we need 1 pouch.

Number of complete pouches = Quotient of 374 ÷ 8.

The remainder will be the number of toffees left behind.

                                                                                                              101
