Vertical Subtraction with Borrowing–IV

(Subtraction of 2-digit and 1-digit numbers

                                         from 3-digit numbers)

        Subtract 55 from 273

        This is written as 273 – 055.

        Step 1: Read ones column. 3 – 5.

                     But 5 > 3. So 5 cannot be subtracted from 3. H T O
We borrow 1 ten from tens place.

                                                                                                       6 13
                     Now 1 ten + 3 ones = 13 ones.
                                                                                                 2 7 3
We cross out 3 and write 13.

                     Also we cross out 7 and write 6. – 0 5 5

                     Now, 13 – 5 = 8. We write 8 in ones column.
                                                                                                 2 1 8
        Step 2: Read tens column. 6 – 5

                     6 – 5 = 1. We write 1 in tens column.

        Step 3: Read hundreds column. 2 – 0.
                     2 – 0 = 2. We write 2 in hundreds column.

        Subtract 5 from 423

        This is written as 423 – 005.
        Step 1: Read ones column. 3 – 5.

                     But 5 > 3. So 5 cannot be subtracted from 3.

We borrow 1 ten from tens place.

                     Now 1 ten + 3 ones = 13 ones.

We cross out 3 and write 13.
                                                                                                H T O
Also we cross out 2 and write 1.

                     Now, 13 – 5 = 8. We write 8 in ones column. 1 13

        Step 2: Read tens column. 1 – 0
                                                                                                 4 2 3
                     1 – 0 = 1. We write 1 in tens column.
                                                                                             – 0 0 5
        Step 3: Read hundreds column. 4 – 0.

                     4 – 0 = 4. We write 4 in hundreds column. 4 1 8

                                                                                                              129
