Let us subtract 275 from 527

Step 1: Read ones column. 7 – 5

7 – 5 = 2. We write 2 in ones column. 4 12
Step 2: Read tens column. 2 – 7 5 2 7

But 7 > 2. So 7 cannot be subtracted from 2.
We borrow 1 hundred from hundreds place. – 2 7 5
Now 1 hundred + 2 tens = 12 tens.

We cross out 2 and write 12.
Also we cross out 5 and write 4.

Now, 12 – 7 = 5. We write 5 in tens column.
Step 3: Read hundreds column. 4 – 2

4 – 2 = 2. We write 2 in hundreds column.
