(Double Borrowing)

Subtract 258 from 426 H T O
Step 1: Read ones column. 6 – 8.

But 8 > 6. So 8 cannot be subtracted from 6. 1 16
We borrow 1 ten from tens place. 4 2 6

Now 1 ten + 6 ones = 16 ones.
– 2 5 8
We cross out 6 and write 16.

Also we cross out 2 and write 1. 8
Now, 16 – 8 = 8. We write 8 in ones column.

Step 2: Read tens column. 1 – 5 H T O
But 5 > 1. So 5 cannot be subtracted from 1.

We borrow 1 hundred from hundreds place. 11

Now 1 hundred + 1 ten = 11 tens. 3 1 16
We cross out 1 and write 11.
4 2 6
Also we cross out 4 and write 3.

Now, 11 – 5 = 6. We write 6 in tens column. – 2 5 8
Step 3: Read hundreds column. 3 – 2
1 6 8
3 – 2 = 1. We write 1 in hundreds column.
