P. 220
ACTIVITY ∙ Experiential learning
Aim: To learn subtraction of a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number
with regrouping
Materials: Square grid paper cut into pieces of 10 × 10 to show
hundreds, 10 × 1 to show tens and 1 × 1 to show ones, children’s
scissors, pencil, chart paper
Note: Students will work in pairs.
Method:
To solve 231 – 47
1. Make three columns of hundreds, tens and ones on the chart
paper.
2. One student places 2 square pieces of 10 × 10, 3 strips of
10 × 1 and 1 small piece of 1 × 1 size in correct columns.
Hundreds Tens Ones
3. The second student sees whether there are sufficient pieces in
the ones column to pick up 7 ones. There are not enough ones.
4. The first student takes one strip of tens, cuts it into 10 ones
and then replaces them in the ones column.
Hundreds Tens Ones
5. Then, the second student observes whether there are sufficient
strips of tens in the tens column. To remove 4 strips, there are
not enough strips.
