STEM ACTIVITY 1
Essential conditions for germination of seeds
¶ Take three bean seeds and tie them to a glass slide – one in middle of slide and other
two on its two sides keeping some gap in between.
¶ Label the seeds as A, B and C. A
¶ Take a beaker and place the slide in it obliquely.
¶ Now, fill water in the beaker such that: B
Seed A stays above the water level (in air).
Seed B is partly in water and partly in air. C
Seed C is completely submerged in water.
¶ Keep the setup in a warm, bright, and safe place for a few days. Water
¶ Observe the changes in each seed after 4-5 days:
Seed A does not germinate because it does not get water.
Seed B germinates normally as it gets both water and air.
Seed C becomes swollen but do not germinate because it does not get air.
STEM ACTIVITY 2
Observing vegetative propagation in potato
¶ Take a potato and carefully locate the depressions called 'eyes' on its surface.
¶ Cut the potato into a few pieces, ensuring each piece has at least one eye.
¶ Bury the pieces in a pot filled with moist soil.
¶ Water the soil daily to keep it moist and suitable for growth.
¶ Observe the pot for a few days.
¶ Notice that new green shoots (aerial parts of the plant) emerge from the soil.
¶ Each 'eye' of the potato contains a bud, which grows into a new shoot through a process called vegetative propagation.
